Sugar Research Institute of Fiji CEO Dr Vinesh Kumar has been appointed as the new Permanent Secretary for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Industry while Public Service Commission Chairman Luke Rokovada says the appointment follows a transparent and merit-based recruitment process conducted in May.
In a statement, Rokovada says following due diligence, the Prime Minister agreed to Dr Kumar's appointment on 12 June.
Rokovada confirms the Commission interviewed five shortlisted candidates on 20 May and agreed to recommend Dr Kumar, who performed outstandingly in the interview, to be offered appointment as Permanent Secretary for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Industry.
He says Dr Kumar brings to the role extensive experience in public service, along with a strong background in leadership, governance and policy implementation.
Rokovada says the Commission is confident that his appointment will further strengthen the Ministry's effort in revitalizing the sugar sector and promoting inclusive programs that support the needs of Fiji's multi-ethnic communities.
He says Dr Kumar worked his way through the ranks in the Ministry of Agriculture and became Permanent Secretary for Agriculture and Waterways in 2021-2023.
Dr Kumar performed as Permanent Secretary Special Project in the Ministry of Sugar in 2023 before being appointed CEO for the Sugar Research Institute of Fiji later in 2023 till to date.
Rokovada says Dr Kumar is well-regarded for his professional accomplishments and good understanding of Fijif's socio-economic landscape.
Dr Kumar has a Degree in Agriculture from USP, Masters in Public Policy Administration from National University of Singapore and PHD in Climate Change from USP.
The PSC Chair says Dr Kumar's appointment is a testament to his proven leadership and dedication to national service.
While congratulating Dr Kumar, the PSC Chair says they are confident he will bring a strong vision and effective leadership to this important portfolio.
Meanwhile, Reshmi Kumari, the Acting Permanent Secretary has moved to her substantive role as Director of Planning, Policy and Research at the Ministry.
